Price Guide for Buying Engagement Rings

You've decided to pop the question, so now all you need to do is find the best engagement ring! Time to go engagement ring shopping.
An engagement ring respresents the ultimate expression of love and the general guide is that you should spend the equivalent of two month’s salary. If you are buying on the Internet it can be tempting to spend under your budget because diamond engagement ring prices are so low in comparison to the high street. This is a false economy however because, as this is quite possibly the most important jewellery purchase you will ever make and will remain a life long symbol of the relationship you share, buying the best you can is the wisest move. Don’t forget you will (hopefully) only have to buy an engagement ring once so it is worthwhile doing it right.
The engagement ring price range is enormous, but regardless of this between 75-90 percent of the cost is always taken up by the diamond or diamonds. If you want a good quality diamond then it is better to channel all your money into buying a single solitaire. Those looking for big engagement rings may be best using diamond engagement settings which make the stone look larger such as the high set claw, as opposed to the rubover setting. Several factors influence the worth of a diamond and in particular the size (or carat weight) and the quality. As a general rule though the best engagement rings use diamonds with a quality of no less than H/SI but if you want a more sizeable stone, this may need to be compromised depending on budget

White Gold versus Platinum Diamond Engagement Rings
Both platinum diamond solitaire engagement rings and 18k white gold engagement rings have their advantages. A platinum solitaire engagement ring is incredibly hard wearing because platinum is strong and durable and it has a low spring back which means it retains it shape very well. On the other hand a white gold diamond engagement ring is cheaper and with the correct treatment can have lustre identical to platinum. You can buy white gold engagement rings for less because the metal is not as strong and the rhodium which coats the outside needs to be redone approximately every 2 years. This is incredibly easy to do though as most jewellers will undertake this for a charge of around £20. Alternatively you could go for something altogether more classic looking by choosing from our selection of amazing 18k yellow gold engagement rings.
Deciding From the Many Engagement Rings Designs
When conducting your engagement ring search it is worth bearing in mind the factors that go into creating contemporary engagement rings. It is imperative to find something that not only looks fabulous but which reflects the wearer's individuality. Several different variables affect the appearance and character from the metal to the engagement ring setting to the cut of the diamond. If you are looking for a more unique engagement ring then shaped diamond engagement rings with a marquise or pear cut offer something a little less mainstream. Read on to find out more.

Round Engagement Rings
Round single stone engagement rings continue to be the most popular style. This is because they are particularly striking as the brilliant round cut achieves the maximum amount of sparkle and fire from a diamond. It is actually shaped like a cone with the circular part facing outwards. The brilliant diamond engagement rings came into existence after diamond cutter Marcel Tolkowsky published his findings for the ideal configuration for facet placement in his 1919 book "Diamond Design".
Emerald Cut Engagement Rings
Originally popular during the Art Deco period, stars such as Beyonce have made this rectangular style popular again with their own emerald cut diamond solitaire engagement ring. It is part of the step category of cuts, which means it has flat, broad facets which rise up like steps. The look is incredibly elegant but emerald cut diamond engagement rings do not produce as much fire and brilliance as other rings. Instead they generate sudden long flashes of light off of their wide, open surfaces

Marquise Cut Engagement Rings
If you choose to go with a marquise diamond engagement ring then you are in good company. Not only does Hollywood star Catherina Zeta Jones own a 10 carat marquise engagement ring, but the shape was originally created for royalty. In the 17th century jewellers to King Louis XIV were asked to create a diamond to replicate the smile of the Marquise de Pompadour. It is part of the modified brilliant category of cuts which means it exudes masses of fire and brilliance. The sleek shape of marquise engagement rings also means that they are very flattering to wear and elongate the finger to create a longer, more elegant line. The stone can be set at different angles however to form thoroughly unique diamond engagement rings.
Pear Shaped Engagement Rings
The pear engagement ring was made possible by Flemish polisher Lodewyk van Berquem who created the diamond cut in 1458. By combining two of his inventions - the scaif, a diamond polishing wheel, and facet arranging with the use of absolute symmetry - the cut was born. It gives off significant scintillation as part of the modified brilliant category of cuts and was used to create the Taylor-Burton diamond, a 69.42 carat pear shaped diamond given to Elizabeth Taylor as an engagement present. The most famous pear cut diamond though is the Cullinan I or Star of Africa, the 520.02 carat weight of which graces the sceptre of the King of England. A pear cut diamond engagement ring is also worn by modern beauty Anna Kournikova
Princess Cut Engagement Rings
A princess cut diamond solitaire engagement ring is a rarely recent phenomenon, only created in 1979 by Ygal Perlman, Betzalel Ambar and Israel Itzkowitz. Princess engagement rings are second only in popularity to the round engagement rings. Previously square cut diamond engagement rings would have been formed from the emerald or Asscher cut, although forerunners to the princess diamond engagement ring included the barion cut created by Basil Watermeyer and the profile cut. They could not extol as much sparkle from the diamond as the princess cut however and were restricted to shallower stones. For an arrangement ring with square setting a princess cut diamond cannot be beaten on sheer brilliance and is why stars such as Penny Lancaster have their own princess cut engagement ring.
The History of Diamond Engagement Rings
For centuries rings have been used to denote betrothal, although early engagement ring designs differed greatly from those we see today. Originally it would have been a combined wedding engagement ring which in Roman times would have been a simple iron band. This was switched to a plain gold band by the 2nd century A.D.
The first acknowledged example of a diamond solitaire engagement ring was in 1477 when Archduke Maximilian of Hamburg proposed to Mary of Burgundy with a lavish diamond engagement ring. Over the years that followed, women's diamond rings of different styles from the fleur-de-lys to the heart shape were created but only the wealthiest patrons could afford them as diamonds were extremely rare and expensive, even small diamond engagement rings
Then towards the end of the 19th century a huge deposit of diamonds was discovered in South Africa. The US diamond company De Beers, who owned the South Africa mines, brought down engagement ring cost so it was affordable to the general public and launched a massive marketing campaign including the now legendary words "Diamonds Are Forever". Where once very few women owned solitaire engagement ring by the 1950´s, almost 90 percent of engaged woman could boast their very own gold or platinum engagement ring.
Another reason for their rise in popularity was that prior to the 1930's, women could claim financial compensation from their fiancé if they called of the marriage. The "Breach of Promise to Marry" Act meant that if a man did not follow through on his intention to wed, women were able to sue him for perceived damage to her reputation. As judges started to phase this out, so quality diamond engagement rings became a perfect replacement for men to show honourable intentions and financial commitment. Fortunately today modern engagement rings have managed to regain their purely romantic roots.
The Law on Engagement Rings
If you have splashed out on, or are now the proud owner of, a white gold princess cut diamond engagement ring or whichever style of engagement ring you have opted for, but unfortunately the relationship has broken down, it maybe be useful to know who legally has the right to keep it. Engagement rings in the UK are considered an absolute gift. This mean should the relationship end before marriage; the woman is under no obligation to return it. The exception to this is if it can be proven that the ring was given under the condition, either implicitly or expressly implied, that it be returned if the wedding does not take place. This was decided in the case of Jacobs v David (1917).
Luckily this is rare and most betrothals run without a hitch. So whether you are looking for unique white gold engagement rings, pave diamond engagement rings, a designer platinum engagement ring or even mens engagement rings, The Diamond Store.co.uk´s collection of both popular and exclusive diamond engagement rings has the ability to make any face light up and help make that special moment the perfect lifetime memory
