Without payment of duty and taxes: EC seeks clearing of aid materials and vehicles
ISLAMABAD (June 22, 2009): The European Community (EC) has asked the government of Pakistan to allow local disposal of all kinds of goods, equipment, including vehicles, imported under grant-in-aid agreements, without payment of duties and taxes in Pakistan. At present, tax policy of Pakistan does not allow 100 percent exemption of duties and taxes on disposal of vehicles, locally.



Government to use SBP for action against sugar mill-owners
ISLAMABAD (June 22, 2009): The government has decided to use State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) to start action against sugar millers for release of stocks aimed at bringing down sugar prices in the domestic market being manoeuvred by the millers, official sources told Business Recorder.
HSD pricing: additional Rs 1.20/litre deemed duty recommended
ISLAMABAD (June 22, 2009): In addition to giving 'deemed duty' to oil refineries, the subcommittee of Economic Co-ordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet, as per ex-refinery oil pricing formula, has recommended to provide additional amount of Rs 1.20 per litre on high speed diesel (HSD) to recover the cost of hydro-desulphurisatio(HDS) project for upgrading of petroleum products.



Imported urea distribution for Kharif: industries asked to remove Punjab and Sindh complaints
ISLAMABAD (June 22, 2009): The Industries Ministry has reportedly been directed by the Cabinet to remove complaints of Punjab and Sindh governments with regard to distribution of imported urea fertiliser for Kharif crops, official sources told Business Recorder.

Afridi lifts Pakistan to Twenty20 title
LONDON (June 22, 2009): Pakistan won their first major title in 17 years when they stunned Sri Lanka by eight wickets in the World Twenty20 final at a sell-out Lord's here on Sunday. Seamer Abdur Razzaq claimed three wickets as Pakistan bowled and fielded aggressively to restrict Sri Lanka to 138-6, then coasted home easily with eight deliveries to spare.

ISLAMABAD (June 22, 2009): President Asif Ali Zardari has felicitated Pakistan cricket team over its win in the final of the Twenty 20 World Cup cricket tournament in London on Sunday. In identical messages from Naudero in Larkana Sindh to the captain and manager of the national cricket team, the President termed the victory as one of the most magnificent moments in the history of national cricket.

Occupied Srinagar -- erupted in celebration after Pakistan beat Sri Lanka by eight wickets and as scores of Kashmiri youth poured on to the streets and lit firecrackers.


Iran blames 'terrorists' for clashes, hits at West
LONDON (June 22, 2009): Iran must allow peaceful protests against its disputed presidential election and ensure a fair result, Western governments said on Sunday, rejecting charges they were interfering in Iranian affairs. Foreign countries have played no part in supporting the violent street protests that erupted in Iran after its June 12 election, Britain's Foreign Secretary David Miliband said.



THE RUPEE: rates drift lower
KARACHI (June 22, 2009): The rupee resisted sharp fall against dollar on the currency market during the week ended on June 20, 2009, amid rising trend in remittances and foreign exchange reserves. On the interbank market, the rupee lost 40 paisa in relation to US currency for buying and selling at 81.35 and 81.40, respectively.
